Chapter 9 Reflection

We tend to read everyday whether you realize it or not. Even looking at the bus your taking or train involves in reading. Reading words are every day usage  but don't forget about graphs, charts, signs, anything that requires reading. In this chapter, it discusses the types of graphical visualization. The six types of graphs are table, graph, charts, diagrams, map and photographs. Graphs and charts are educational and in this chapter because it teaches you how to read and study the graph. Students don't realize that posting graphic aids are designed to make the chapter itself easier to read and understand. After reading this chapter, the students should know how to read a graph, understand it and realize the graphs will make the chapter much easier to read and summarize. I also learned how to read graph and charts better and understand it more while reading the paragraphs on the textbooks.

Chapter 8 Relflection

After finish reading and understanding chapter 8, i learned that all writers(authors) uses the thought pattern to accomplish their stories or work of art. There are six thought patterns that writers use and show how to recognize them: illustration,definition,comparison/contrast,cause/effect,classification, and chronological order. When using the six thought patterns to write, it gives you a plethora of ideas and organization in your writings. Good writers can utilize this idea and transform it into their writings because they understand it very well and thats what makes them a prodigy. In further study of this paragraph, now i can use the six thoughts of pattern to write my papers for college.

Chapter 7 Reflection

After reading Chapter 7, I learned more on how to construct a paragraph that makes sense and flow smoothly as you read. The 4 main things you need in a paragraph or in an essay are the following: topic sentence, main idea, supporting details, transition, and conclusion. Each paragraph must have those in order to make the paragraph understandable and organized. When you read, try to figure out what the main idea is because that will help you understand what the passage or paragraph is about. Look for key terms as you read the sentences, some might be an example, fact, reason, procedure and more. This will help you identify what you are reading and develop a clear understanding of what you read. The last thing I learned are transition sentences. These are the sentences that link the paragraph. It makes it easier to read and understand.

Chapter 6 Reflection

Before reading this chapter, I knew how to write a paragraph effectively. For each paragraph, you will need a topic sentence which explains what you will be focusing on your paragraph. After reading, this chapter, there is more to constructing a paragraph. In order to write a understandable and a organized paragraph, you will need a topic sentence, main idea, and transitions. Transitions are the most important in ending a paragraph because it links you though the next. There are also many transition sequences that are used to write a strong paragraph such as adding, contrasting, concluding, comparing, summarizing, and indicating sequences. All of these will help us write full and effective paragraph.

Chapter 5 Reflection

In this chapter, it gives information on how to become a better reader and to better understand the passages more effectively using SQ3R. SQ3R is a method used by many readers, authors, and writers. When reading, you must first read the title and the italicized words underneath the title. It gives you an idea of what you are going to read about. Ask questions to yourself about the article and find the answers to your questions after you finish reading. Once you finish reading, review what you read. Go back to the articles and recall the details in the selection.

Chapter 5 Article" Body Piercing and Tattoos"

In this article, Body Piercing and Tattoo was first seen back in the 19th century. It was presented for different cultures and genders. It then got popular throughout the 20th century. Tattoo's appeared to be worn on motorcyclists, military guys, gangs, or general rough necks. Now teenagers have it all over the place and became a common thing. Piercing can be pierced on all parts of the body and even tattoos as well. The most concern thing about piercings and tattoos are the unsterilized needles. Many people can transmit their diseases through the needles that were used after an infected person. The most important thing is to make sure you go to a clean place to get a your piercings and tattoos. After getting a piercing or tattoos, make sure you wait one year to donating blood if you are attempting to do so.

Chapter 4 Reflection

Before reading this chapter, I had a brief understanding of what its going to be about. After further reading and visualizing the details on the reading, there are more to learn about word parts and learned new words. In every word, there is at least one prefix, root or suffix that is created in the word. You can then use any of those categories to figure out the meaning. When learning new words, create a vocabulary index card. Jot down all the new words learned or unfamiliar with and then define it with your dictionary. This way you can always go back to the meaning and memorize the word. Make sure you use the word once in a while so it stays in your mind and get familiar with it when using the word.

Chapter 3 Reflection.

After reading chapter 3 about "context clues", I understand more on how to use it and which one to use when figuring a word that I dont understand. Every article, passages or novel has at least one word that you are not familiar with. In that case context clues should be used to help you figure out that word. There are 5 types of context clues: Definition Clues, Synonym Clues, Example Clues, Contrast Clues, and Inference Clues. The context clue I prefer to use will be synonym clues. It gives me that vocabulary's definition by reading a synonym(a word that have similar meaning) to figure out the word.

Chapter 2 Reflection.

In Chapter 2, I learned many new ways to better understand the passage when reading College textbooks. College textbooks are designed to work with your instructor's lecture to provide you with reliable and accurate information. When reading a textbook, you must first read the caption and title. It gives you a brief understanding of what the passage or article is about. Not only did it give information about reading strategies and what the college textbooks does, chapter 2 also gave us details on how to write. Such as writing complete sentences, dont just write a 1-5 word response. Give in detail about your response.

Chapter 2 Conversational Dilemmas.

In this reading selection, Conversation Dilemmas were introduced to the readers. Conversational Dilemmas are conversations that has no meaning and will never get to an end. Everything you say will cause a problem or some sort of undesirable outcome. There are 6 categories of responses to conversation dilemmas: Direct Response, Indirect Response, Deception, Impression Management, Pleasing the other, and Soliciting the others help. Researchers  have concluded that if you get into any of the conversational dilemmas, you can use them to resolve the issue.

Gambling for many people is a big problem. There are many gambling addicts that lost their job, house, family, and exc.. It has a big impact in our life. People get hooked on to it just like drug addicts. College students at age 18 get addicted in what the most popular gambling event "poker". Many students often borrowed money or have lost a lot of money from poker and gambling. Those money can be used for tuition or educational expenses. "What your Mother never told you about College"

Before reading this article"What your mother never told you about college," I did not no much about college life. I want to know more about the college academic part, teaching and self studying strategies, and how to do well in classes. I learned from reading this material that college is not what senior thinks in high school. It is not party, have fun and hang out. You have to pay for all your classes and depend on yourself. This article gave a lot of strategies and advices for newly freshmen. I learned many new ways to save money and time. Such as always buy used books or rent the book if you know you wont need it after the course. Always pick the professor that can teach well and not the time that fits in your schedule.

"Stop asking about my Major" reflection

Based on what I've read, parents always ask their kids that if the major they picked can lead them to a career or a job. This passage simply denotes to the readers that parents are more concern about jobs after graduation not som much about their child's major. In the article Jesse, did not like the major he was in. His parents wanted his to go into pre-med but he did bad in that course and did not get good grades. At the end, Jesse finally found that he likes engineering. He was confidence in his interest, as a result he did well and earned himself a degree and a lucrative job. It tells you that what ever major you are interested in, always choose what you like because your life is you own and no one can encounter you. Just pick what you want to do and dont worry about the others.

Chapter 1 Reflection

Before reading this chapter, I knew that in order to be successful in reading and learning, you must focus on what you read. Taking notes and marking down the most important notes on each passage can refresh your mind. It gives you a better understanding of the article and it may help you towards test and quizzes. For every hour you spend in class, I should spend about 2 hours studying that class. I learned from this material that in order to become a successful person, reading and writing is the most important throughout your career. When reading choose a quiet place that has no noise so you can focus on reading. I will like to know more about how to improve your reading skills and reading in an higher or advanced level.
